The beetroots came from an organic farm in Tárbena. They were photographed and then eaten by the artist. Their strange, weightless beauty suggested a scene from outer space, so she introduced astronaut Buzz Aldrin, taken from Neil Armstrong’s iconic 1969 moon‑walk photograph.
In a world of fast food and genetically modified crops, we might well be drifting toward an era of astronaut rations. Let us savour the humble beetroot while we still can.
The reworking of the piece involved repainting the black background and the frame after it had travelled through various exhibitions.
